On to Taipei
Tomorrow, I’m heading over to Taipei for a while. I have mixed emotions here, on one hand I’m really looking forward to meeting all the guys again and seeing the shiny new OpenMoko office — on the other hand, there is quite a bit of internal disagreement which may only be resolved by some serious discussions. Being the optimist though, it is my hope and utter belief that I will return from this journey with a renewed vision and plan for the next 12 OpenMoko months.

It seems between the lines that you guys have big problems.
Do you think the whole project is in jeopardy? When will the phone be available for public?

@Koen: One OpenMoko month is 1.5 human months
@Asher: Well, hopefully nothing we can’t solve. At this point of time, I’m still hoping GTA02 can make it under the christmas (or whatever you are celebrating around the end of the year) tree…

@Mickey: I hope you are right, as it will mean I will be able to get it in late november.
BTW - it seems as the issues you have is with the development of the software, so why do you have to wait for full resolution? why not sell the hardware with the most rudimentary phone apps, let the masses buy this unbelievably sexy product and then download the final software?
Also, I am not a real expert and may have missed the explanaiton, but why no camera?

@Asher: This is what we did with GTA01 and the masses were flaming us because gsmd (and other stuff) was not ready for prime time…
As for the camera, for GTA01 and GTA02 the case was already finished. Changing tooling (for a new case) is _very_ expensive. Besides, once you put a camera in, you run into a lot of mechanical problems first, and after you solved them, you need high quality software to make up for the low quality of mobile phone cameras. We need do this step-by-step. A camera is on the wish list for future models.

@Mickey: great many tks for patience with my questions.
Good Luck, I will be waiting!
But pls, improve/update OpenMoko.com, it does not look very good and is rarealy updated. I am not an Open Source person, but I wud say that following the rationale of Open Source, the site shud also be “open” and give “up to the minute” info on the status of product.
tks, that’s all!

I’m appalled that people flame you because of not finished software. I think you all said it clear enough that it would work for proper use yet. I’m quite happy with mine even though I can’t use it as a phone yet. It already has a lot of other possibilities for a developer.
And by the way.. I wouldn’t call the phase 1 “prime time”
Wait for that when the final version is there.
@nacer
The phone will certainly have synchronization features. One of my projects is to get syncevolution ( http://www.estamos.de/projects/SyncML/ ) to work on OpenMoko, so we can sync with Google Calendar. Hmm. Linux is nice

OK, a camera will come earlier or later. I’m happy to hear this.
But the other important point for me is UMTS (respectively other standards). Are there any plans ripe for decision?

@F30: Plans yes, but there is a certain limit of things we can work on in parallel
Besides, going to UMTS is also pretty expensive due to the increased licensing costs.

Hey, the OpenMoko is fun! Thanks for all the good work your doing! And it always was clearly declared as an developper-model. So please don’t expect it to be the new Nokia whatever… These phones, although miles ahead, can’t compete at all with the OpenMoko. It’s the four letters before Moko taht make the difference…
