Sid Player on iPhone

You all know how much I adore the C64 sound aesthetics. This is the #1 program I was missing in my iPhone.

Out now in the App Store!

In the next version may we copy the full HVSC from my PC to the iphone via wifi? I don’t want to download them one by one…

I think a download all button will be enough to solve this problem.

    Kai: Ok :)

Absolutely brilliant! Use it every day and was well worth the money. Is anyone else having trouble playing some tunes? eg. Wizball (Martin Galway) default tune 4/9 plays for only 6 seconds? Tried removing app and cache but still no go …

MkDj: Turn ON override song length

  11. mickey wrote:

Yeah, sorry about that, but it’s a problem in the HVSC song length database — some entries are completely bogus or even missing.

We should think about a simple method to submit corrections to the HVSC via the Sid Player.

In the meantime, DnP’s advice will work.

  12. MkDj wrote:

Thanks DnP that worked a treat :-)
Didn’t actually try that as I didn’t want to fiddle past default settings incase I made it worse!
And thanks Mickey for clearing that up - never knew there was a problem in the HSVC song length database …

Mickey: In the next release will it be possibe to use HVSC in offline mode? pls pls :)

  14. John wrote:

I’m using it now… But is this player interpreting all tunes correctly? Some don’t sound right…

  15. mickey wrote:

John, do you live in a country where the TV-system is NTSC? If so, this could explain the difference. Version 1.1.49 (out in January) will feature switching NTSC/PAL.

  16. John wrote:

Mikey, I’m in Australia (PAL). Hopefully this issue will be fixed by next release. I’m still enjoying the tunes I can play.

  17. Stainy wrote:

It doesn`t seem to play tunes over 5 minutes… ie Parallax.. it stops.. even if you check the song length box in settings..

  18. mickey wrote:

Unfortunately we thought 5 minutes should be enough for the longest tunes… this will be set to 10 minutes in 1.1.49 (due soon).

Thanx a lot Michael! This is a very usefull app for SID lovers. :-) I hope there will be a favourites list option in the future with favourite title + tracks.

  20. enigma_loner wrote:

I ordered an apple i touch just for this application! Ive always wanted a portable SID player, without having to build a midibox one. Cant wait to try it.
Will you be putting a playlist creator feature, and visulizations on it?

  21. mickey wrote:

A playlist creator will definitely show up, just not in the next update though. Visualizations are tough, since we already max out the device’s CPU. We try hard to do some more optimizations though…

Hi thanks for this great app! There are some sid tunes that i have thats not included in the HVSC. I know how to transfer them to my iphone.. but in what folder do i place my own sids? i really hope that this is possible?

And also.. how do i delete ONE sid from my downloaded list? Thanks!

  23. mickey wrote:

Deleting SIDs from the list is supported in the update that’s been out since yesterday. Adding own SIDs will be featured in the next update, although we have an easter egg embedded in 1.1.49 with regards to browsing with mobile Safari. Try opening ’sidplayer://’ links.

  24. enigma_loner wrote:

Just downloaded latest ver. currently downloading entire libary. Very happy. Well done all involved. could you explain the easter egg to me? i know that defeats the object but oh well.
    Big thanks

Is this forum the right place for iphone ’sid player’ related suggestions and bug reports? If so, I’d be delighted to give some feedback. Don’t worry, I love the app.

  26. mickey wrote:

Feel free to leave feedback here, however the canonical way is to send a mail to the support address (sidplayer [at] vanille [dot] de).

  27. Swamp wrote:

Wow the update was great! Good that you now can delete the tracks that you dont want. Looking forward to the function to add your own sids!

I have gotten error messages with some of my Sid tunes saying that the Sid track is to advanced to play and the track stops after a few seconds. and a red “!” appears to the left of the track in the “played” section. But i can still play them if i try again. a bug?

  28. Nullzero wrote:

You will have to forgive me for being such a newb to all this. To be blunt, I’m still not entirely sure what this app does. Is it mostly for playback or can it be used to compose tunes on your itouch/iPhone?

  29. Thinktank wrote:

Nullzero, I’m not sure you’ll get an answer here. A lot of these boards are just bot forums created with a few dummy profiles and fake discussions to harvest emails. Either that, or your question was not SID player endorsing enough to respond to. You’d better just try it for $2.99 and determine for yourself.

  30. mickey wrote:

@Thinktank: Your view may be applicable to most forums, you’re wrong here though.

@Nullzero: The Sid Player is “just” a playback engine for the C64 music that was very popular in the 80s and still is. As such you have access to over 35000 songs that have been handpicked by the very enthusiastic team that is responsible for the HVSC (High Voltage Sid Collection).

A full composer would be stellar, but is a major undertaking, something we can not deliver. Due to the low visibility and the high amount of (strange *cough* stuff) in the AppStore, iPhone development can only be a part-time job for us — hence we would not even try to create such a major thing as a SID composer.

Plus, we have the Sid Player Lite now so that you can have a free trial.

    Cheers!

Okay, sorry for the , probably dumb, question at this sunday morning, but I can’t figure out how to transfer the whole HVSC-Library (v51) into my iPhone… Is it possible to to do it via my PC, I tried to drag and drop the package into iTunes which didn’t seem to work, or do I have to access http://www.hvsc.c64.org/ directly from my iPhone and download the whole library directly into my phone? As I have only a little amount of free MBs to download I want to be sure how it works before I download the package directly?

    Thanks in advance…

    P. S. the iPhone is not jailbroken…

Note: Sid Player is free for good now to show our respect to the HVSC authors and community. If you want to support our work, then please download our other retro players… Sid Player Pro, Pokey Player, and Module Player. Cheers, Mickey.

  33. Murray wrote:

Love the player, Michael. You’re a legend.

Would be great if there was a download all button, so I can grab them all while on wifi, and hit the road with the full collection.

    Keep up the top work!

  34. mickey wrote:

@murray: It’s a pleasure :) Take a look at the .79 cent version or the slightly more expensive Pro version – they both have the download all button ;) [must have at least a bit of incentive to facilitate further development…]

By the way, the version for iPhone OS4 due this summer will feature playing in the background and full access via headphone remote control (finally…). Lots of more cool features coming as well. Oh, and… it’s coming to your iPad as well in a special edition… stay tuned.
